Fashion and garment design is the art and science of creating clothing, from the initial design sketch through to the finished garment. It combines creativity, technical skill, and an understanding of fabrics, body shapes, and current trends.

The core steps in garment production are:

  • Design: Sketching ideas and selecting fabrics.
  • Pattern drafting: Creating templates for cutting fabric.
  • Cutting: Transferring the pattern to fabric accurately.
  • Stitching: Joining garment pieces with seams.
  • Finishing: Adding fasteners, hems, and pressing.

Good measurements and careful construction are the foundation of a well-fitting, professional garment.

Pattern drafting converts body measurements into a set of templates used to cut fabric. A good pattern produces a well-fitted garment with minimal fabric waste.

Common seams and techniques include:

  • Plain seam: The most common seam — used for side and shoulder joins.
  • French seam: Neat, enclosed seam for lightweight fabrics.
  • Darts: Used to shape the garment around body curves.
  • Bias binding: Finishes raw edges neatly.

Pressing at every stage keeps the finished garment crisp and professional-looking.
