About Us - Our History and Commitment

Historical Evolution

A chronological overview reflecting the precise progression from trade certificates, Craft Certificates to National Certificates, the 2022 rollout of Modular Competency-Based Training, and the current pathways Technical Institute / VTI for S4 leavers.

1. Establishment and Early Mission (1952–1960s)

Founding & Stewardship (1952): Founded in 1952 during the British colonial era under the Catholic Church (Missionaries of Africa / White Fathers) in the Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese / Mubende region.

Initial Designation (Rural Trade School): Established to equip local youth with practical craft skills to boost rural development and community infrastructure. Entry at this time was open to P4 leavers.

Initial Trade Offerings:

  • Brickwork / Block-laying and Concrete Practice
  • Carpentry and Joinery
  • Tailoring and Garment Cutting
  • Shoe Making
2. Transition to Technical School & Re-designation (1970s–1980s)

Status Upgrade (Technical School): Upgraded from a basic vocational centre to a Technical School during the 1970s and 1980s, streamlining foundational trades around:

  • Brickwork / Block-laying and Concrete Practice
  • Carpentry and Joinery
  • Tailoring and Garment Cutting

Official Institutional Naming (1985): Formally re-designated as St. Peter's Technical Institute Mubende, reflecting its expanded technical mandate and recognition as a regional centre for vocational training.

3. Expansion into Engineering & Advanced Craft Courses (1990s–2000s)

Introduction of Automotive & Advanced Courses (1992):

  • Added Motor Vehicle Technician training.
  • Launched Advanced Craft Courses: Building & Concrete Practice (BCP Advanced) and Carpentry & Joinery (CJ Advanced).

Garment Design Advancement (1995):

  • Introduced Tailoring & Garment Cutting (TCG Advanced).

Electrical & Plumbing Technology Integration (2001):

  • Added Electrical Installation.
  • Introduced Plumbing aligned with regional standards across East Africa.
4. Curricular Reforms & Assessment Modernization (2010s–Present)

Shift to National Certificates (2016): Fully transitioned from traditional Craft Certificate programs to formal National Certificates.

Modularization Reform (2022): Shifted to Modular National Certificates, enabling flexible, competency-based unit assessment for trainees.

Assessment & Regulatory Bodies: Aligned training and certification with national assessment frameworks, including:

  • UBTEB (Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board)
  • DIT (Directorate of Industrial Training)
  • Integration into national TVET frameworks under UVTAB (Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board).
