Plumbing is the system of pipes, tanks, fittings, and other apparatus required for the water supply, heating, and sanitation in a building. It is a critical trade that ensures clean water reaches every tap and wastewater leaves every building safely.

The main plumbing systems are:

  • Water supply: Pipes delivering cold and hot water to fixtures.
  • Drainage: Pipes removing wastewater and sewage.
  • Ventilation: Pipes equalizing air pressure in the drainage system.
  • Sanitary appliances: Sinks, toilets, showers, and basins.

Good plumbing protects public health — a leaky pipe or a badly installed trap can lead to contamination and disease.

Plumbing uses several pipe materials, each with its own tools and joining technique:

  • PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): Lightweight plastic pipe, joined using solvent cement. Common for drainage.
  • GI (Galvanized Iron): Steel pipe joined by threading and screwing. Common for mains water supply.
  • PPR (Polypropylene Random): Plastic pipe joined by heat fusion. Common for hot and cold supply.
  • Copper: Metal pipe joined by soldering or compression fittings. Common in high-quality installations.

Correct joining is essential — a poorly joined pipe will leak, corrode, or burst under pressure.
